…lead where you are…

How often do we wait for a title or position to take on a leadership role? Or we convince ourselves that we will when we are a little less busy, or when we are finally asked, or when we feel like we have everything together in our personal life, then that is when we can finally lead? Those are pure excuses and lies that we have bought into to convince ourselves that we aren’t good enough, strong enough, or qualified enough to lead. Well, show me who in the Bible (besides Jesus) was actually ready to lead when they did? God chose the “dark horses” of the time, those who were considered weak, not popular, and ill equipped to lead His people. It was so God’s glory could shine through them and they couldn’t take all the credit for themselves. As well as their humility required that they sought out God’s direction, wisdom, and plans instead of their own.

So…what are you waiting for? Are you waiting for everything to be perfect or are you going to try to start leading where you are right now?

Take Moses for example, he was a foster child that even though looking at his own life circumstance had every right to have a pity party for himself. However, God was using his circumstance to set Moses up to be exactly where God needed him to be in order to rescue His people. Moses also didn’t think he had the capabilities to be a strong leader. He questioned God about how would anyone believe him or would he even know the right words to persuade the Pharaoh to let God’s people go. When Moses questioned himself, God didn’t say, “Oh yeah Moses? Ok, let’s wait until you go get a college degree in communication studies and prelaw before you go talk to the Pharaoh to free my people.” Instead, he said I am sending you, this is what you are to do and say, and go do this now.

“Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Exodus 4:12

Each morning we have a choice to make about our day, and we can chose to lead where we are right now despite our life circumstance or skills. Leading where you are means literally right now where you live, work, and play. It also means leading in the state of condition that you are in heart, mind, and soul. We need God to fill in the gaps of our imperfections to help us become great leaders that have a great impact on the world that we interact with everyday.

If you continue to wait for all conditions to be perfect, then you find yourself stuck, missing out, and forever waiting…and that is no way to live life to the fullest always waiting for something to happen.

So start leading where you are right now. So go. God will equip you to speak and lead. He needs you to go now.

Take out a pen and paper and write these categories down, and for each category write how you can start doing these things in your work, at home, at your church, and with your family and friends. And before you know it, God can use your talents, time, and resources to reach those who need to be freed.
